Recessing the Screen
To make the screen look like it is recessed into the body of the GIZMO
we are going to create a copy of it and then apply some
Live Effects.
- Make a copy of the Screen and name it Screen
Recess.
- Make sure Screen Recess is selected.
- Set the fill colour of the Screen Recess shape
to black and the stroke to None.
- Click on the Add Effects button. Choose Shadow
and Glow > Drop Shadow.

- Choose the following settings in the Drop Shadow
options box.
Direction: 3
Opacity: 100%
Colour: Black
Softness: 5
Angle: 134
Knock Out: Checked
- Because we chose the Knock Out option all that
is visible of the Screen Recess shape is the
effect.
Try hiding the Screen Layer in the Layers
panel to see the effect of the Knock Out
on the Screen Recess.
We are now going to draw a simple line to act as a screen divider.
- Choose the Line tool.
- Set the Line tool's stroke properties to:
Colour: #666666
Tip size: 2
Stroke Category: 1-Pixel Soft
- Draw a line across your screen about 30 pixels
down from the top edge.
To make sure you draw a perfectly horizontal line you can hold down the Shift
key before you start to draw. This constrains the Line
tool.
Your GIZMO should now look something like the
image below:

- Rename the line you have just drawn Screen Divider
in the Layers panel. Select the Screen
Divider, Screen and Screen Recess layers.
Group these and name the group Screen.
